Some love for STAB JV Lacrosse

It has been awhile since I dug into the vast well of STAB Lacrosse memories. No time better than the present.

We haven’t touched on the subject of STAB JV Lacrosse. Some may remember the days when Coach Woodfolk roamed the sideline and the JV team ran the table every year. Some guy named Rullman took the helm in 2005 and was never quite capable of producing the magic Coach Woodfolk whipped up. Maybe it was because he never made them run and Monday was kickball day.

Anyway, I had a good time coaching JV Lacrosse. We had our years when we were pretty damn good. One year we were really good. Chapin was running midfield, Mikey was running attack and Max was a beast crease attackman. But let’s face it. We were running the table because Austin was making around 30-40 saves a game.

My best memory of that season was a game out at Western. We went out there pretty cocky and quickly fell behind the Warriors. After a key substitution in which Max was inserted into the attack line up, STAB JV pulled even on two goals by big Max.

STAB JV gained the lead but the Warriors didn’t go away evening the score in the fourth quarter. With the score still knotted up, Austin took off from the crease and proceeded to run the ball into Western’s defensive box. From a good 15 yards out, Austin broke out a low to high scorcher that was miraculously saved by Western’s one-armed, blind and deaf goalie. Okay I embellished that a little bit but the truth is, the Western goalie snagged Austin’s shot like it was a floating beach ball.

The ref begin to give the count while the Western goalie stood in his crease looking for an outlet. Meanwhile, the entire crowd behind us was screaming, “shoot it!” Wouldn’t you know, the pecker whipped back and heaved the ball toward our empty net. The ball took one hop in front of STAB JV’s defensive restraining line and narrowly escaped being caught by any three of the defensive players. It took two more hops on Western’s beat up grass field and came to rest in the back of STAB JV’s goal.

I was so shocked and amazed that I couldn’t even speak. All I could think was, holy crap we are going to lose to Western on a goal scored by its goalie FROM HIS CREASE.

Thankfully, we controlled the next faceoff, scored a quick goal and were able to add another for the win. I’ll always remember that goal.

What capped the night was STAB Varsity winning in OT on a goal by Owen that was actually a misfired pass to Jack cutting in front of the goal. That was Western’s best chance to give STAB its first loss to a public school since 1993.

The streak is still alive and has no chance of being ended.

Damnnn Nate, bringing back the old JV days. We were nasty that year and I remember that Western game so clearly. But thanks for the shoutout, those were the days.

Don’t forget about the 2002 tripple overtime Varsity game vs WAHS where Will Craig (wahs) hit Dave Schnur (sp?) in the foot from on top of the crease in the 2nd ot. Kelly Mattie then decided he had enough and took the faceoff theough the whole WAHS team and scored.

Another memory from JV was Woodfolk getting the dumbest shirt ever. It said “Hills and drills for skills and thrills”

Coach Woodfolk’s camp shirts were always the best. It was even funnier when you would see total randoms wearing the shirts around Charlottesville. Randoms like people picking up litter on 250 or landscapers.

Nate, you shouldn’t have brought back JV lax memories. They are too painful. Never in my life had I been on a team that went 0-14 in any sport except that very unfortunate season. That season literally stopped me from picking up a lax stick again. But it was fun, can’t believe we did the sun stretches. I think you were a better JV soccer coach to me then JV Lax.

    Best,
    Jay

hahaaha…Once I saw that the WAHS goalie chucked it I stopped running and prayed for it not to go in. We were dirty though….I wish we could get that second Collegiate game back…and both Shock games…I HAD to score that year. I ran around the box a few times against Swift Creek before you called a time out (that saved my elbows) and every stick side high shot was like a breakout pass…those days are over..except for Trinity and Covenant next year

Don’t forget Patrick’s lefty bull dodges…I think he watched too many Canadians play.
